that. >> tom brady discusses a hidden message in his signature. after decades of signing memorabilia from abc news, this is america this morning. good morning everyone. i'm lionel moise in for andrew and i'm rhiannon ally. >> good morning to you. we begin with the flooding emergency in the northeast. two people were missing in connecticut after they were swept away in flood waters. up to ten inches of rain could fall in that region. >> meanwhile, some beaches are closed in north carolina after a home collapsed into the ocean. but we begin with the flooding threat in the northeast. overnight, flash floods, mudslides and widespread destruction in the northeast. >> this water is at least 4 to 5ft high, nearly a foot of rain falling in just hours in western connecticut. >> streets and sidewalks were suddenly overwhelmed by water moving fast enough to carry away cars. >> cars shut down because it sends the water. and unfortunately, i was in the process of just backing right out of it. >> at least two people were

missing overnight after they were swept away by the current, and more than 40 people were stranded at a campground after a bridge was washed out, cutting off their escape route. rescuers rushing to save dozens of drivers trapped in the flooding. >> you can swim, bro. you can swim. all right. worst case scenario, one good samaritan was seen jumping into action to help rescue a man and his dog. >> after this car was surrounded by water in new jersey, a major highway was brought to a standstill by a half a foot of rain, and trains between new york and philadelphia stopped running for a time. the storm also canceling and delaying hundreds of flights. meanwhile, hurricane ernesto is still causing chaos on the coast after causing damage in bermuda. new york city beaches are closed again today due to the threat of dangerous rip currents, and in north carolina, storm surge from ernesto washed this home right off its foundation. elsewhere, some states face blistering heat at least 100 people in colorado springs suffered heat related

illnesses during an air show on sunday, where temperatures were nearing triple digits. and in alabama. oh my goodness. a day of fun. turning to terror as a surprise storm sent this bounce house flying through the air. very scary video. fortunately, no one was inside that bounce house when it broke loose from its tethers. >> it is fortunate democrats are gathering in chicago for their national convention for vice president kamala harris, and president biden will take the stage tonight. thousands of protesters are also there, and the governor says the national guard is on standby. abc's jacquelyn lee joins us now live from chicago. good morning jacqueline. big day. >> hey good morning to you. and then also, you know there's a lot of delegates arriving in chicago. many people are excited, but protesters are also gathering for the first of many planned protests that 40,000 people dead. the protest got underway last night in chicago hours before the start of the democratic national convention.

an estimated 1000 people marching peacefully through the streets demanding action on reproductive rights, lgbtq rights and an end to the israel-hamas war. >> 34 major events here planned most of them focusing on gaza. demanding that the biden-harris administration impose a cease fire immediately, and an arms embargo on israel. >> some businesses are boarded up and mailboxes near the convention were sealed to thwart bombing attempts. vice president harris plane touching down in chicago for the four day convention. she'll take the stage on thursday formally accepting the democratic nomination. tonight, president biden will be center stage giving a prime time speech to make his case for harris. >> i very much consider us the underdog. we have a lot of work to do to earn the vote of the american people. >> a new poll shows harris leading former president trump in a head to head matchup with a six point lead among likely voters. and as i started

listening to her and following her, i thought, this woman is going to be good for this country. republican vice presidential nominee, senator jd vance says he isn't fazed by the polling. >> kamala harris got a bit of a sugar high a couple of weeks ago, but what we've actually seen from our own internal data, shannon, is that kamala harris has already leveled off. the poll also shows harris trails trump by double digits when it comes to the key issues of immigration and the economy. >> she says she's going to lower the cost of food and housing starting on day one. but day one for kamala was three and a half years ago. >> over the weekend, trump zeroed in on harris's recently unveiled economic policy while continuing his personal attacks against the vice president. they said no. >> her biggest advantage is that she's a beautiful woman. i'm going. i never thought of that. i'm better looking than she is. >> some republicans, including senator lindsey graham, are urging trump to stick to talking policy. his policies are good

obstructing the deal. blinken is meeting with the prime minister before heading to egypt, where talks are set to resume this week. >> the focus of my visit is intensely on getting the hostages back, getting the cease fire done. it is time for everyone to get to yes and to not look for any excuses to say no. >> president biden and vice president harris have both said they are not giving up on a ceasefire, as ukrainian forces gain more ground in russia. >> president zelenskyy says the goal of the incursion is to create a buffer zone to prevent further attacks by moscow. ukraine claims it's already captured hundreds of russian soldiers, and zelenskyy is urging allies to speed up aid deliveries. ukraine reportedly blew up a third bridge this morning, disrupting supply lines to russian troops. >> now to jorge santos. the former congressman is expected to plead guilty today in his fraud case, and a plea deal could mean santos avoids a trial after he was accused of lying or

embellishing parts of his resume and personal history. here's abc's ike ejiochi. >> embattled former congressman jorge santos has insisted he is innocent and had vowed to fight criminal charges against him just last week, reaffirming his not guilty plea to 23 felony charges, including fraud, identity theft and misuse of campaign funds. >> now i'm going to have to go and fight to defend myself. >> sources tell abc news santos is expected to change his plea to guilty at a hearing requested monday by his attorneys. >> the fact that he can be facing 20 years in federal prison, and this might be an opportunity for him to avoid jail time or to minimize the amount of time altogether by taking a plea. >> santos was expelled from the house of representatives in december. his time in congress steeped in controversy. he has admitted to lying to voters about his education, his career and his family background, claiming his grandparents survived the holocaust. but the federal charges he's facing mainly involve money

allegations, including lying to congress about his wealth, defrauding donors and using campaign funds for personal expenses. it's unclear which federal charges santos may plead guilty to or what his sentence could be. he's due in federal court on new york's long island monday afternoon. a guilty plea would avoid a trial that's scheduled to begin next month. abc news reached out to santos, his attorney and federal prosecutors for comment, but has not received any response. ike jackie, abc news, new york. >> our thanks to ike for that report. u.s. businesses are keeping a close eye on a looming rail strike in canada. the two biggest railways in canada carry millions of tons of freight to and from the u.s. both have threatened to lock out workers thursday if a contract cannot be reached. one railway has already banned container imports from its u.s. partners. >> time now for a look at your morning weather. the severe weather system that hammered the

new york city area has moved into new england. there is a possibility now that the northeast could see even more heavy rain tonight. flash floods turned roads into rivers in new jersey last night. local streets and highways were brought to a standstill, along with public transportation. looking at today's high temps, mid to upper 80s in much of the country. 90s in triple digits in the south and the southwest. 88 in denver coming up, the major recall involving chicken nuggets. >> also ahead, a man charged with two attempted abductions over the span of minutes. how both attempts were stopped and a ferris wheel catches fire with people on the ride. >>

>> the cause of this ferris wheel fire at a german music festival is still under investigation. the flames began in one carriage, then spread to a second. saturday night, more than 20 people were injured. the car that caught fire was empty. >> reports of metal wires and packages of chicken nuggets has prompted a recall by purdue. it's pulling more than 167,000 pounds of frozen nuggets and tenders out of the market. purdue says thin strands of metal wire accidentally made their way into some packages. there haven't been any reports of any injuries yet. >> a michigan man is being held without bail, accused of trying to kidnap two girls on the same day. abc's alison kosik has the details, people, versus andy balogh. >> this morning, a 23 year old is charged in the attempted kidnaping of two girls in separate incidents outside detroit in broad daylight. both attempts were thwarted by good samaritans. >> i have a lot of anger and

aggravation and rage. >> alicia swokowski was at a park with her son and seven year old niece on tuesday when police say andy balogh pulled up in a car and approached her niece. >> he went out of his car, back around, grabbed her and then tried to get into the passenger seat and we just met right through the mid car's window. >> he had one hand on her and one hand trying to get the wheel. i had one hand on the wheel, trying to get his hand off of her. >> that's when bystanders scott van leuven saw what was happening. >> i literally pulled him out of the car and just held him against his car until police got here. >> and just an hour before police say the same suspect tried to kidnap a 15 year old girl just a few miles away. >> he asked if he could drive me home twice, and i refused both times. and i started walking off. >> the suspect grabbing her by the wrist. paul billeter was
